Career Choices: Environmental Health Officer

Job Description

Environmental health is an interesting and challenging career. Environmental Health professionals are concerned with protecting the health and well being of the community and our environment. The Environmental Health course at Curtin is the only course in Western Australia recognised by the Australian Institute of Environmental Health, a member of the International Federation of Environmental Health. Graduates may pursue a career in environmental public health as an Environmental Health Officer with Local, State and Federal Government agencies.

Potential Employment

Local authorities, state government and other governmental agencies concerned with community health. Industry and consultancy services.

Estimated Salary

$40 -$90k In Western Auatralia employers often pay a premium to staff working in remote locations.

Scope of Work

The scope of work and responsibilities of a graduate in the management of environmental hazards is very broad and may differ from one employer to another. Employment opportunities for graduates also exist with health agencies in overseas countries.

Current issues in environmental health include: environmental pollution, air, water and noise; hygiene and safety of food; communicable disease; health of indigenous communities; domestic and industrial waste management; and the management of pests / safe handling of pesticides.
