Dietetics Graduation Class of 2009, Postgraduate Diploma in Dietetics and Awards
- The graduating class of 2009 in the Curtin University Dietetic program will remember the 17th December as their last day at Uni. Staff in the program will remember it as the day an event was held to celebrate the students’ achievements and to present awards to the largest group ever to graduate, twenty nine graduates.

SoPH in the News: "PhD Student gives olive oil acid test" (Countryman 11/02/10)
- A few drops of citric acid when making olive oil increases the amount of final product by more than 20 per cent, according to new research. The acid also boosts the oil's health benefits.
Curtin University of Technology PhD graduate Hui Jun Chih said phenolic compounds in olives were proven antioxidants that rid the body of the free radicals that cause oxidative stress and contributed to cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer.

SoPH in the News: "Study says fast food ads leaving a bad taste" (The West Australian 10/02/10)

WA researchers have attacked junk food sponsorship of televised cricket matches, particularly KFC's Big Bash, which they claim is giving the fast food company more than $50 million worth of advertising time.
A Curtin University study in today's Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health says sponsorship by junk food and alcohol brands is swamping cricket
coverage and sending the wrong message to young fans.

WACHPR receives the WA World AIDS Day Award
- WACHPR received the Western Australian World AIDS Day Award for the group that has made a significant and sustained contribution to the fight against HIV/AIDS in WA.
The Award was presented on the World AIDS Day (December 1, 2010) Remembrance and Celebration function held at the AIDS Memorial in Robertson Park, North Perth. The award was for not only the HIV specific work that WACHPR has been involved in, but also the broader work that WACHPR does with marginalised and at risk communities, such as the My-Peer Project and other programs, and also all the 'extra' work WACHPR does to support the response to HIV in WA and Nationally.

CBRCC and School of Public Health Staff receive Awards for acknowledge outstanding contributions to Public Health
- Public Health of Australia (WA Branch) presented its annual awards at the Annual General Meeting, held on 17th November. Three awards to acknowledge outstanding contributions to public health were made to individuals associated with CBRCC and the School of Public Health at Curtin.
Congratulations to: Professor Rob Donovan (Individual Community Award), The Cancer Council of WA (Group Community Award) and Mr Jonathan Hallett (Early Career Award).
Congratulations also go to Curtin Public Health and CBRCC staff who were nominated for the new 2009‐2010 PHAA Committee: Jonine Jancey; Ginny Monteiro; Peter Howat.
Anne Polley and Gemma Jahn win the Health Promotion Award for Excellence in Sessional Teaching
- The Health Promotion Award for Excellence in Sessional Teaching which was presented by Dr Sharyn Burns, (Program Director) to Anne Polley and Gemma Jahn. Anne and Gemma have been members of the sessional team for three years and two years respectively. They have worked across a variety of units and have assisted in rewriting unit content, implementing new activities and providing prompt and comprehensive feedback to students and staff. Both have strong industry backgrounds in health promotion across diabetes, physical activity, alcohol and other drugs and public health policy.
We would like to take the opportunity to congratulate Gemma and Anne on their awards and once again thank all of the sessional staff for their hard work throughout the semester.
SoPH Head of School attends 41st APACPH conference in Taiwan
- The 41st APACPH Conference (held in Taiwan in December 2009) was a great opportunity to meet our colleagues from the Asia Pacific region and to make links to develop research collaboration and potential staff and student exchanges. The meeting was the 25th Anniversary of APACPH and it was celebrated in style by Professor Wen-Ta Chiu and everyone in Taipei.

High Tea and Health Promotion
- Health Promotion hosted an afternoon tea for its sessional staff on Thursday 19th November at 3pm. The event, in the form of a high tea was complete with patterned china and petit fours. The event was attended by the Health Promotion Department staff, Professor Fyfe and around eight of the sessional staff. Several Health Promotion staff commented that it was actually the first time that they had met some of the sessional staff, many of whom work externally as far away as Manjimup and had driven up especially for the event.

Jonathan Hallett wins the PHA Early Career Award
- The Public Health of Australia (WA Branch) presented its annual awards at the AGM on Tuesday 17 November. We are delighted that one of the awards, to acknowledge outstanding contributions to public health, was made to Jonathan Hallett from the School of Public Health. Jonathan won the Early Career Award.
Congratulations Jonathan!
SoPH in the News: "The good oil on fats in your diet"
- From an early age we are taught to cut the fat off meat, choose skim milk and only eat chocolate in moderation to keep our consumption of fat to a minimum and our waislines in check...Dietitians Association of Australia spokeswoman and accredited practising dietitian Denise Griffiths said fat was an essential part of the diet but it is vital to choose the right types.
